It was a memorable day for two loved-up revheads, with Joshua Verde proposing to his girlfriend Melissa Cattanach following their spin on the track.
“I have never seen that happen at Stawell before,” Stawell Motor Sports Club president Ben Rolph said.
“Lucky for him she said yes.”
Sixty burnout cars including 12 from South Australia competed in the day-long competition in two classes.
Jason Schmidt took out the pro eight class while Paul Watts led the way in the pro six class.
Rolph said attendance figures were down on previous competitions but he was still pleased with the turnout.
“We had a good amount of cars again but the heat probably meant we had a smaller crowd than hoped,” he said.
The heat caused headaches for competition organisers who had to ensure the safety of all competitors and spectators before the event.
“The preparation for it was pretty full on,” Rolph said. “We had extra firefighting units there, we hired an ex-CFA tanker and we had the CFA inspect the grounds to give us the all clear that it was safe to compete.”
Burnout competitions have become a regular occurrence in Stawell, with the town’s venue proving popular with revheads from around the nation.
“The feedback we receive is positive and we always see people come back,” Rolph said.
“It is a good thing for us as a club and the town as a whole. When people drive from all over the place they stay the night in town, which is great for a lot of businesses.”
The club’s next event will be a callout competition on April 28.
Rolph said he encourages anyone who has never been to one of the club’s events before to come and have a look.
“It is more than just some cars doing burnouts. We have a show and shine as well as food trucks from Horsham and Geelong. It has a really fun atmosphere,” he said.
