Stawell student athlete Tom Walker’s preparations for the 2018 Stawell Gift are underway following last week’s Victorian Country Track and Field Championships.
Competing in the under-20 5000 metre event at Ballarat on Friday, Walker finished 12 seconds behind Frankston Athletic Club’s Jesse Dunsmore to claim second place in the race, but finished as the winner in the country section.
It was the first time the Stawell Secondary student had raced 5000 metres on a track and it was a good first outing, narrowly missing out on qualification to the national championships by two seconds.
“I definitely felt it was longer but I worked my way through,” Walker said.
“lt was a bit unfortunate to miss out on the qualification but I get another crack at it at the Victorian junior championships in Melbourne on February 23.”
Walker returns to Ballarat this weekend where he will compete in the one and two mile races at the Ballarat Gift.
