Stawell’s temperatures exceeded 30 degrees by 9.30am that day and went on to peak at 41.7 degrees at 4pm.
Lake Lonsdale’s water drew in residents and tourists alike, with canoeing and biscuit riding proving popular.
A late evening cool change brought temperatures down rapidly with an overnight minimum of 15 degrees.
That temperature was also comparable to some of the coldest Stawell January nights on record.
It was one of Stawell’s hottest January days since the weather station commenced recording at Stawell Aerodrome in 1969.
The all-time record was 44 degrees on January 14, 2014, previously 41.4 degrees on January 23, 1982.
