A SEVERE weather warning for damaging winds has been issued for areas around Ararat and Stawell.
Strong northerly winds are expected over elevated areas ahead of a cold front which will cross the State today and tonight.
Damaging winds averaging 50 to 60 kilometres per hour with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are expected to develop about elevated areas during Tuesday morning.
The strongest belt of winds will gradually contract eastwards, but wont clear far eastern Alpine areas until around midnight Tuesday. Peak gusts over Alpine areas area expected to reach around 110km/h.
Locations which may be affected include Stawell, Ararat, Kyneton, Ballarat, Daylesford and Falls Creek.
Stronger wind gusts to 4am:
- 109km/h at Ben Nevis (4.30am)
- 89 km/h at Mt William (2.55am)
MONDAY
A SEVERE weather warning for damaging winds has been issued for areas around Ararat and Stawell.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast that an approaching cold front will strengthen northerly winds for a period on Tuesday morning.
Damaging winds averaging 50 to 60 kilometres per hour with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are possible about elevated areas of the western half of Victoria during early Tuesday morning.
Winds are expected to ease by the afternoon.
Locations which may be affected include Ararat, Kyneton, Ballarat and Daylesford.
The State Emergency Service has advised that people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
- Keep clear of fallen power lines;
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEDT Monday on the Bureau of Meteorology’s website.
