Stawell Sergeant Bryan Anderson said police believed the offender made a booking online, but arrived at the Great Western Motel Hotel after closing time and became frustrated.
“The person responsible tried all the doors and has then become frustrated with this so smashed a window before leaving,” he said.
“We believe this is the connection and that is the avenue we are using to investigate.”
It comes after thieves went on a heartless crime spree at Great Western between December 7 and 10.
Burglars targeted Ararat Stawell Archers Club, Great Western Primary School, Great Western Racing Club and Great Western Riding Club.
A rear shed at Seppelt Cellar Door was also broken into, but it is still uncertain if any items were removed.
