Stawell Times-News photographer Peter Pickering said it had been the first one he had seen in more than 40 years.
Department of Environment Land Water and Planning wildlife officers confirmed it was an Eastern bearded Dragon, commonly found in the Grampians region.
Officers said anyone wishing to keep an Eastern Bearded Dragon as a pet required a licence to do so, available from DELWP at wildlife.vic.gov.au.
Once a licence is obtained, Eastern Bearded Dragons may only be purchased from a licenced dealer. They cannot be taken from the wild.
