School principal Nick Lynch said Stawell Historical Society approached him and asked about the book’s whereabouts. That is when Mr Lynch went on a search and found the black leather hand-bound treasure beneath the school.
“It is very impressive,” he said.
“It was hand-written by past students and hand-made and it has such detailed profiles – the unit they joined, any promotions, subsequent careers, any wounds and it goes on.
“It is probably still in such a great condition because it hasn’t been touched all these years.”
The book contains 19 profiles of people who served during World War I.
“After we found the book we showed it to some long-term Stawell residents and they have been moved to tears,” Mr Lynch said.
Stawell Historical Society’s Jim Melbourne said it was a special discovery.
“We knew the school had it somewhere, so it is great news they found something so valuable,” he said.
