Police were called to Grano Street at about 8pm on Saturday following reports of noises that sounded like gunshots or fireworks.
Ararat police Sergeant Brett Johnson said officers could did not find evidence of firearms or explosives in the area or any suspects.
“The most likely explanation is that some people were watching the second preliminary AFL final, which was on that night, and were celebrating when Richmond won,” he said.
The Richmond Tigers secured their first game in the Grand Final in 35 years after the final siren blew in their game against the GWS Giants at about 7.20pm on Saturday.
Sergeant Johnson said it it was illegal to let off fireworks without a licence and doing so created a risk of fires and injuries.
“Fireworks are banned items,” he said.
