Matthews is heavily involved with the Warriors, with her main roles being the treasurer and sitting on Stawell’s netball sub-committee.
The humble Matthews said she had no idea she was going to win the award.
“I was in shock,” she said.
“I didn’t expect anything like that.
“They gave me the microphone and I got up there and said I can’t talk, I was speechless.
“I got up there and said a big thank you to everyone.”
Matthews started volunteering for the club in the early 1990’s and has been at the club since.
Matthews has two children that play for the Warriors in both football and netball teams. Matthews completes first aid for all netball grades away games and every senior game.
She provides support when required to the coaches on the bench and entered data electronically.
“On game day you make sure the day runs smoothly and don’t get to see much of the games,” Matthews said.
Wimmera Netball Association chairwoman Donna McKenzie said Matthews’ knowledge is so vast and comprehensive she is the “go to” person for any information.
Matthews is dedicated to the Stawell community, she coordinates the lease of the facilities and arranges catering for commercial purposes, club wakes and funerals.
Matthews said the Stawell Football Netball Club means a significant amount to her.
“I guess it means everything,” she said.
“I really enjoy what I do. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
“They’re a fantastic club.
“We have an excellent committee that has got a good mix of experience.”
Matthews said there are no signs of stopping for her going into 2018.
“I’m looking forward to another season and hopefully we can get a little higher on the ladder,” she said.
“I’m hoping that we can keep going along, filling in our teams and providing the opportunity for people to get involved. The more the merrier.”
In the immediate future, Matthews said she is hoping for Stawell’s 13 and under netball team to come away with a victory over Horsham in Saturday’s grand final.
“I’m hoping the girls have a good dip this Saturday. They have beaten Horsham before so we know they can do it,” she said.
