The Review into the Electricity and Gas Retail Markets in Victoria found people in places with only one gas or electricity provider faced significantly inflated prices.
The review’s final report was released this week. Among its 11 recommendations are that power companies should offer a basic ‘no frills’ service.
Stawell’s Tanya Meyer said Wimmera gas prices were ridiculous.
“Our last bill was the biggest ever – $452 – with the price rises. Prior to this price hike our largest bill was only ever around $290,” she wrote on the Wimmera Mail-Times Facebook page.
Horsham’s Danielle Hatherell said the review findings were predictable.
“Hubby and I have no kids, but we're paying $51 a week just to stay ahead of the electricity bill,” she wrote.
Horsham’s Samantha Sordello said it was unfair there was no price discount for gas supply in the city.
Member for Lowan Emma Kealy said energy was unaffordable.
“The report clearly states strong intervention is required to make sure consumers are getting the best deal possible,” she said.
“I have repeatedly approached the Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio regarding excessive gas pricing and the monopoly situation that exists in the Wimmera with only one gas provider available.
“The minister made a commitment in early 2015 to develop supply competition in the area to protect the interests of local residents, but has taken no action to provide the opportunity for another provider to enter the market, leaving local residents with no choice of supplier.”
Ms Kealy said small businesses in the area had reported massive increases in their gas and electricity bills.
She said the review also found a confusing pricing structure meant it was near impossible for many families and small businesses to shop around for energy deals and compare prices.
