Yarriambiack Shire councillors are encouraging all residents to use the tool and give feedback to the authority about the state of the region’s roads.

Council infrastructure and planning director James Magee said VicRoads had launched the mapping tool for the region on its website.

“It encourages people to give feedback about areas they are concerned with by locating them on the map,” he said.

“The map gives people the opportunity to write comments and suggestions and that stays on the website so other people can see.

“Hopefully if enough people comment, we can gather some momentum with areas that are concerning.”

Mr Magee said the tool was worthwhile and hopefully it would help councils better lobby for road funding.

“If enough people make their point then hopefully the politicians can give VicRoads more money.

“The website allows people to share their knowledge and experiences with the road network across the key areas of road safety, the freight network, rain maintenance and tourism.

“It’s a great opportunity for rural people to have their say.”

Cr Shane Roberts said the tool was a great idea.

“Residents are calling for road upgrades and this is a way to make people more aware of what is happening,” he said.

Council has been lobbying VicRoads for a realignment of the Horsham Lubeck Road and Murtoa Glenorchy Road intersection; resealing of the Henty Highway at Goyura, and safety improvements at many other bridges and intersections in the shire. 

The VicRoads mapping tool has already attracted a number of submissions regarding road safety throughout the shire.

People are concerned about poor visibility at the Rainbow Road bridge at Warracknabeal; tyre ruts between Galaquil and Brim; and that the Borung Highway is too dangerous to drive at 100 kilometres an hour, which is the speed limit.
