Creek was notified on Monday of his inclusion in the side following a camp at the Gold Coast across the weekend. He said he was lost for words.
“It was phenomenal and it hasn’t really sunk in yet. When they asked me how I felt about it, I thought, ‘is this a stitch up?’,” he said.
“To be called an actual Boomer … I’ll never forget that moment. There was a lot of emotion in the room.”
Creek’s dream as a child was to pull on the green and gold jersey – now that will come true at the Cup in Lebanon from August 8 to 20.
“I am proud of where I am from and it’s an honour and I am humbled to be able to call myself a Boomer,” he said.
Creek said the opportunity to play for the Boomers motivated players to become the best they could be.
“When you come into the Boomer program and see the professionalism, you just want to be the best player you can be,” he said.
Creek said it was a privilege to play with some of the best basketballers in Australia.
“It’s one of those things where I used to watch some of them on the TV and now I am next to them,” he said.
“It is a special experience. I don’t think you can fully understand it until you’ve gone through everything it takes to get here.”
Creek said he had worked hard to improve his game.
“My pace and defensive work and then my transitions, my heat on the glass and my ability to shoot the ball even better are things (the selectors) looked at,” he said.
The captain of the Adelaide 36ers, Creek had a stint at Utah Jazz in the NBA summer league and said that chance helped him take another step in his career.
“Hopefully this is another stepping stone in my career and will fulfill my dreams of playing in the NBA and the top leagues in Europe,” Creek said. “Fingers are crossed this is the right path.”
Creek thanked the community for its support.
“People like Owen Hughan, Beau McTaggart, Steve Bruce and Kerry Smith … they are people who always supported me through everything. I wouldn’t be here today without them,” he said.
