The artwork at Rupanyup silo was completed by Russian artist Julia Volchkova. Her portraits of netballer Ebony Baker and footballer Jordan Weidemann have added a new dimension to our silo art trail. Artists for the silos at Lascelles and Rosebery have been selected and it is anticipated that they will begin painting before the middle of the year.
Along with my fellow councillors, I had the pleasure of presenting the Yarriambiack Youth Achievement Awards, recognising the excellent contribution made by seven young people of our shire. Congratulations to Tenaya Zanker, Joe Collins, Zac Robins, Chelsea Michael, Riley Keel, Kelsey Renkin and Hope Dempsey. And to Yarriambiack Youth Councillors, Elise Morrison and Tom McGrath, who hosted the evening and to the young guys from Nexus Horsham who assisted with lighting, sound, and music. The event was held at Lake Lascelles, Hopetoun, in conjunction with the second year of screening short films made by junior filmmakers, as part of the Endoreic film festival.
The Easter weekend was a busy time for Warracknabeal. Many hundreds of visitors came to be part of Y-Fest activities.
The Warracknabeal Arts Council hosted the official opening on Good Friday evening at the shire offices. The function room was packed with young and old who had come to see the artwork of local artists – Joan Goad, of Brim, and Ron Penrose, of Harrow. A huge crowd of spectators lined both sides of Scott Street to witness the 50th annual parade of vintage farm machinery, classic cars, and floats.
That afternoon, action switched to the racecourse, for the running of the Warracknabeal Cup, to the Lions Park for the busker’s competition, and to Wheatlands Agricultural Museum to view the extensive array of exhibits on display. On Sunday, the foyer extension to the Wheatlands Museum was officially opened by Danielle Green MP, parliamentary secretary for Regional Development and Tourism.
As activities in Warracknabeal wound down, I travelled to the Northern Grampians Shire to witness the finals of the Stawell Gift. Congratulations to another one of Yarriambiack’s young achievers in Bridget Powell, who came a close second in the ladies gift final.
It is reassuring to know that the future of our local towns will be well served by all these young people of Yarriambiack Shire.
