Victorian Farmers Federation president and Murra Warra farmer David Jochinke said the bags are a valued recyclable asset.
“This is the most grain bags I’ve ever seen,” he said.
“It was a massive year, with farmers looking at alternative options for short-term storage.”
Mr Jochinke said most bags were virgin plastic and could be recycled.
“It’s good for the agricultural industry to do their part ensuring plastics are recycled,” he said. “Potentially they can go to landfill and what we really don’t want it to see people burning them.”
Paper Freight Recycling’s Dennis Collins said so far he hadn’t seen a big uptake in recycling this year.
Farmers can drop-off at sites at Warracknabeal Transfer Station, Carines Merchandise in Horsham, WasteBuster in Horsham or Ecowish in St Arnaud.
