The Magpies led from the first quarter and looked in control for the entire game off the back of Nathan Curtis’ four goal haul.
Missed chances cost Tatyoon the lead at quarter time, with the Hawks going into the first break four points down despite having an extra scoring shot.
The home team piled on four goals in the second quarter while the Hawks again struggled to score heavily only managing two goals straight.
A 22-point margin separated the two 2016 grand finalists at the long break with the home team getting the game on its terms more often.
The Hawks were unable to bridge the gap early in the third quarter with the Magpies able to slot two more goals to win the third quarter by two points and take a four goal margin into the final term.
The visitors had a chance to get within striking range but four behinds from six scoring shots created meant the Magpies were able to hang on to claim their first victory of the season.
The result leaves both teams at 1-1 and outside the top four with Tatyoon in fifth position, ahead of the Magpies in sixth.
Joe Otto kicked two majors to support Curtis’ efforts in front of goal with Bailey Veale the only other multiple goal kicker for the Pies.
Sam Thomson nailed two of the Hawks’ eight goals in the 13.12.90 to 8.8.56 loss.
Mitch Cronin was named Tatyoon’s best on ground while Tristan May got the nod for the Magpies.
