Brambuk – The National Park and Cultural Centre has guided tours and where you can see dramatic rock art. Spend time at Brambuk to see innovative displays and hear the traditional stories of the local Aboriginal people. Stawell Gift Hall of Fame is located at Central Park in Stawell, and is a must-see attraction as it is a part of our nation’s history, and a veritable treasure trove, complete with artefacts, memorabilia, multimedia clips and archives dating back to the inception of the Gift in 1878. The museum contains 130 years of history, including quirky facts about the Stawell Gift.
Did you know the winner of the old man’s race in the inaugural Gift back in 1878 was awarded a pig as first prize?
If nature is your thing, don’t miss a visit to the Stawell ‘Ironbarks’ Deep Lead Nature Conservation Reserve. Situated on the outskirts of the township of Stawell, the 1823 ha reserve has been described as “...one of the most important sites for nature conservation in Victoria. It supports at least 21 threatened species, including three plant species not found anywhere else in the world.”
The reserve contains a variety of forest eucalypts, all important homes and habitat to birds and animals, and the easy identifiable red ironbark (the southern part of the reserve is known locally as “the Ironbarks”). An extensive road/track network gives easy access to walk and cycle around the well signposted roads and tracks.
Other attractions include the Big Hill Lookout, several small Art Galleries, the Leisure Centre with a rock climbing wall and the Stawell Cultural Heritage Trail.
