The former Rat gathered 15 disposals in wet conditions in the Blues’ first win of the 2017 season.
The 18-year-old said he had felt a mix of emotions before the game.
“I was nervous coming in, obviously it was my first AFL game so there were always a little bit of nerves there,” Williamson told carltonfc.com.au.
Williamson was named in the initial squad for the game on Thursday but did not find out he would be playing his first game until the final team was named on Friday.
“Brendon Bolton called me into the office and let me know,” he said.
“I walked in and Bolts shut the blinds and thought am I in trouble here but found out some good news, so thankful for that.
“It was a pretty nerve-wracking experience coming in but I think I am better for it now.”
The defender also acknowledged the support he has had from his hometown along the journey.
“It is massive for me, for the town as well and the Ararat Football Club and all they have done,” he said.
“From all reports, mum and dad said half the town was here, it is really good to have everyone here and everyone at home for the support, so thank you.”
In a show of faith from the Carlton coach, Williamson started the game on the ground and settled into the game quickly, finishing the first quarter with five disposals.
Brendon Bolton was full of praise for Williamson’s game in the post match press conference, saying he held his own in a tough game.
“It was a really important moment for us before the game when Stephen Kernaghan came in and presented young Williamson with the guernsey and told him what it means to play for our club,” he said.
“I think a little bit of that spirit rubbed off.”
Williamson was selected by Carlton with pick 61 in the 2016 AFL National Draft after playing for North Ballarat Rebels in TAC Cup under-18 football.
He played one preseason practice match last month prior to his senior AFL debut.
