Great Western v SMW Rovers
ONLY missed opportunities by the Rovers prevented the Lions from being really blown out.
The final score of 13.27 (105) to 11.6 (72) showed just how lopsided the game could have been had Rovers capitalised more often.
The Rovers were on top all day and started off by registering nine scoring shots to one in the first quarter but only managed three goals to one.
The Lions continued to fight in the second quarter.
The side was down by a single goal due to accurate kicking in front of goal while the Rovers continued to struggle in that department.
The Rovers opened up a 43-points lead by three-quarter time as the side piled on a further six goals and eight behinds.
The Lions continued to fight the game out and won the last quarter but were left to rue kicking only single goals in the first and third quarters.
Shannon Notting was a stand out for Great Western as he kicked six goals, as was Luke Notting who was his side’s best.
Taytoon v Ararat Eagles
A FIRST round test against last season’s premiers was always going to be difficult for the Eagles.
Ararat kept with Tatyoon early as goals were hard to come by but as the game went on the difference in class between the sides showed.
A five-point lead at quarter time turned to 38 by half time and eventually the scoreboard read 16.20 (116) to 3.11 (29) in favour of the Hawks.
The Eagles had no answer Matthew Blackburn kicked three goals in a best on ground performance.
Ararat’s best was Curtly Maxwell.
