What a dynamic community we live in. In the past week alone, we have had the Wimmera Machinery Field Days, fishing competition, car and bike show and the motocross amateurs event.

The fishing competition is now in its 40th year. It’s an important event that showcases our beautiful Wimmera River, attracting many people from outside the region. It was fantastic to see Horsham teenager Ebony Ballinger take out the grand prize for her 1412g yellowbelly. The Field Days is another premier event that continues to go from strength to strength. It provides an opportunity to learn about developments in farming practice, machinery, equipment and services and, again, brings thousands of people to our region. One of our most prominent sporting events, the Horsham Triathlon, was held last month, showcasing our city as competitors made their way through.
We also had a visit from the Western Bulldogs as part of the club’s annual community camp. It was a privilege to meet with coach Luke Beveridge and premiership players.
Horsham Agricultural Society celebrated its 140th anniversary last month. Congratulations to Dalton Cross and the committee for their ongoing support of this institution.
Many local teams will be participating in Horsham and District Relay for Life at Coughlin Park this weekend. Since 1999, this event has raised about $1.5 million for the Cancer Council, an outstanding effort.
Cultural Diversity Week is from March 18-26, with a number of events in Horsham. We should be proud of the way we support and encourage all people to be a part of this community. While on the topic of diversity and acceptance, Victoria’s first Gender and Sexuality Commissioner Ro Allen is bringing the LGBTI Equality Roadshow to Horsham tomorrow and Friday.
Horsham Country Music Festival will be held from March 23-26. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the festival, which continues to attract high quality performers and visitors from across Australia. And, for the first time ever, Nitro Circus is coming to Horsham on Easter Sunday. Expect to see some of the world’s biggest and most dangerous stunts right here in Horsham.
These events contribute greatly to the economic and social fabric of our community and could not happen without significant volunteer input. I congratulate everyone who helps make this community a vibrant and dynamic place to live, work and play.
