Joiner was in his fifth fight and for the fifth time he was victorious, taking his record to 5-0.
Taking on Adelaide’s Marcin Chalupa, there was nothing separating the two heavyweight fighters in the first round as they exchanged blows.
Joiner gave himself the upper hand in the fight though when he performed a take down and got to the mount position.
The round finished and gave Chalupa time to regroup.
Joiner’s coaches insisted that he kept his hands up and use the legs kicks.
In the second round, Joiner was again on the attack, performing another strong take down.
Chalupa slipped out of Joiners’ hold and was able to do some damage of his own from on top.
Joiner battled to get back in position and was able to win via submission in the final stages of the second round.
It was the first time Joiner had won by submission.
Joiner said it is his will to win that got him over the line despite both fighters being exhausted..
“Your competitive nature kicks in and all your life events come out in your fighting,” Joiner said.
“I think my will to win was greater than his, that was probably the difference.”
As always, Joiner had plenty of sore spots following the fight but he plans on being back in training on Tuesday.
“Neither of us were ever really hurt we were just really tired,” Joiner said.
“It was really tough in that first round. It was probably the biggest and best fight I have had so far.”
Joiner and his team will look for another fight in the coming months, but for now he will train to make sure he is ready for whatever comes his way.
His coach, Rodolfo Marques, is preparing for a title fight and Joiner plans on helping him with his preparation in the lead-up.
