One kangaroo was mauled to death while the other was left so critically injured it had to be euthanised.
Member of the Warracknabeal Lions Club and former president Murray Parsons said neighbour Tye Shibley heard the commotion about 1am and flashed a light at the enclosure.
“He said the dogs were far too big for him,” he said.
“This is very unfortunate. The playground in the park is used by every type of person. Kids love coming to the playground and seeing the kangaroos.”
The two kangaroos were the last living at the park. Mr Parsons said it was disappointing.
“If dogs do get out into a public area it is the responsibility of the person who owns them to prevent any danger,” he said.
“And dogs of that size – they were clearly hunting dogs because the only marks were on the back of the legs and heart – can do a lot of damage.”
Mr Parsons said the kangaroo enclosure was two metres high. He said there were no holes or cuts in the wire to indicate where the dogs may have got in.
