The state government is investigating possible changes after 40 complaints were lodged by tenants, landlords and real estate agents in Ararat and the Wimmera in 2016.
This included 11 complaints at Stawell, five in Ararat and two at Great Western.
Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said the numbers of renters was continuing to grow and the community should have a say in shaping new laws.
“We need to make sure that we’re striking a fair balance between the rights of landlords and the rights of renters,” she said.
“If people have an experience to share, I’d encourage local renters and landlords to be a part of the conversation.”
The proposals have been developed following 331 written responses to the Fairer Safer Housing discussion papers and 3500 responses to forums.
Submissions close on February 10 and can be made at fairersaferhousing.vic.gov.au/renting
