The weather was overcast with the track classified as good for the town’s showpiece race.
The five-year-old is trained by Stawell’s Terry O'Sullivan and finished the 2000-metre race ahead of Caves in second place and Hornets’ Nest in third.
The Stawell product started from barrier five in the race.
It was an all Stawell affair with jockey Jessica Eaton also from the town.
Eaton has ridden the horse for the past two races and is starting to form some good chemistry with the horse.
O’Sullivan said he was impressed with the performance.
"I was really happy with the win," he said.
“He won well and she rode him well during the race to get the victory.”
Golden Oldies has been recovering from a serious tendon injury.
O’Sullivan said the cup provided his first full race distance workout under race conditions.
“He had had four runs before the St Arnaud Cup but we were working up to this,” he said.
"We had a good leadup to the race.
“Golden Oldies ran well and finished fourth in the 2000-metre Manangatang Cup on October 8.
“So we will see how he pulls up.”
O’Sullivan said he will train the horse in preparation for another local meeting.
"All going to plan we will go and race him in Ararat Cup on November 6,” he said.
Golden Oldies’ win was O’Sullivan’s third St Arnaud Cup as a trainer.
Golden Oldies has been racing for two years out of the Stawell stable.
All going to plan we will go and race in the Ararat Cup next.
