AFL 9s is a fast, fun, free-flowing game that involves nine players on each team playing on a smaller field. The game is non contact and is open to all ages, with no tackling or bumping.
Goolum Goolum Aboriginal Co-operative youth engagement officer Jacob Cooke-Harrison said the Community Cup would run over four weeks at Coughlin Park and would include four teams.
“We’ve got a Goolum Goolum team, a team from Taylors Lake, Saints and a Community Spirit team,” he said.
“There’ll be adult and kids teams and, because 9s is played on a smaller field, we’ll have two games running in conjunction.”
People are encouraged to nominate and put their name down for the Community Spirit side. Goolum Goolum’s health and wellbeing manager Dean O’Loughlin said the Community Cup would start on November 7 and run to November 28.
“The idea is to get people off the couch and get them active,” he said.
“They’re mixed teams. It’s a pretty friendly, but still a little bit competitive.”
The come and try day is at Coughlin Park at 5.30pm on October 24.
A barbecue and drinks will be provided.
“It would be great to see some supporters and spectators down there,” O’Loughlin said.
