The Hornets put in a good effort but went down 61-49.
Coach Damien Kilpatrick said the team got into foul trouble nearly and that cost the side.
“The majority of it was our own fault,” Kilpatrick said.
“The boys were dropping their hands a little.”
Despite the loss Kilpatrick still considered it a good result.
“Sturt is a very good team, there’s no doubt about it,” he said.
“We had to fight very hard after early turnovers.
“They got out to a 19-point lead and we went on a run to bring it back to eight.”
Hobbs scored a game high 22 points in the loss before fouling out.
Kilpatrick was again full of praise for his undersized talls.
“Breuer was giving away a foot of height against their Sudanese player,” he said.
“If we played our best then it would have been very interesting.
“We had too many turnovers and unforced errors.
“They aren’t a 12-point better team then us.”
The side headed to the beach to recover after the game before taking on North West Tasmania on Tuesday night.
Kilpatrick said if his side recovered quickly enough after the hard game it could be confident heading into the fixture.
“We need to bring the same intensity and pressure,” he said.
“If you don’t play you best ever game you will lose.”
Both team have one win and one loss after the first two games meaning that a top-two spot is up for grabs.
The top-two sides in each pool progress contest the championship in the second half of the week while the bottom-two side battle it out for the shield.
