Exell, now former Dimboola coach, said he was excited to return and lead the Kalkee seniors.
“I am pretty excited I suppose,” he said.
“It is still very much in its early stages.
“I have been calling around all the players from last year to see if they are keen to stick around.
“The response seems positive so far.”
Exell left Kalkee for the Wimmera League about seven years ago.
Kalkee president Trevor McRae said former coach Steve Schultz has committed to stay with the club, while Tim Wade’s status remains unconfirmed.
“Steve is 100% committed. Tim hasn’t led on about his future plans but we are keen to see him keep playing,” he said.
Exell said he hopes to move the Kees up the Horsham District Football Netball League ladder.
“Obviously Steve and Tim have done a terrific job so I will just be building on that,” he said.
“Things won’t change drastically, it has been working well.
“I will put my own spin on things so hopefully that and our younger player’s development will get us up the ladder and keep us improving.”
McRae said Exell is an ideal fit.
“It is fantastic for him to come to come back to Kalkee, we always hoped he would and now the time is right,” he said.
“Hamish is a fresh face with a lot of experience, he has worked under some quality coaches at Dimboola.
“To have learned off them and bring a mix of those ideas and his own is a great fit.
“He is a very intense thinker of the game which will be great for our younger guys to learn from.”
Exell took on the Dimboola senior coaching gig in October 2015, after former coach Stuart Farr decided he would not continue his role in 2016.
He initially declined, but took on the challenge of returning Dimboola to its former glory and accepted a one-year deal.
