Grampians regional manager of forest and fore operations Peter Kambouris said access to some areas would be limited due to significant winter rainfall. 

“As areas of the Grampians region are still very wet, people should check local weather and track conditions before venturing out for firewood,” he said. 

“We also remind all users to remain on formed roads and tracks and ensure no off-road collection takes place. 

“Any available firewood will be of varying sizes and quality and as a result of the current conditions, people will need to collect firewood by hand and carry it to their vehicle, so a wheelbarrow may be useful.”

The collection of firewood from public land is only permitted in designated areas until November 30. 

Mr Kambouris warned the period may be shortened due to rain or a shortage in firewood.

He said it was important residents did not take advantage of the scheme. 

“It is illegal to sell firewood collected on public land without an appropriate permit or licence or to take more than the allowed amount,” he said.

“This is a limited resource so consider others when taking wood.”

The department and Parks Victoria staff will patrol firewood collection areas.

The fine for illegal collection is $622, with the maximum penalty for offences under the Forest Act 1958, a $7773 fine and a year in prison.
