Walker recently returned from a four-day competition in Canberra where he represented Victoria.
Walker finished 44th out of the 71 participants who started the six kilometre event..
His Victorian team finished second overall behind running powerhouse New South Wales.
Walker was pleased with his run.
“I recorded my personal best time so I have to be happy with that,” Walker said.
It was a really good experience and I hope I am good enough to make it again next year as a top age competitor.”
The 15-year-old ran a brave race settling into the back of the field.
Walker was steady early as fellow racers opted for tactics over speed.
“I just tried to run my own race,” Walker said.
“It is a big step and the competition is a lot harder at that level. I just tried my best.”
Walker found himself in approximately 60th position for the last couple of kilometres.
A strong finish saw him pass almost 20 runners.
For Walker the experience, as a whole, has taught him a great deal.
It was his first experience in a plane and a stay at the Australian Institute of Sport was a highlight for many young aspiring athletes.
Walker had miles to do, to qualify for the Australian Cross Country Championships, with a run at All Schools Cross Country his starting point.
Walker finished fifth in his age group and 15th overall to see him make the Victorian team.
Since returning home Walker has rested his tired legs and is looking forward to getting back into running with his teammates.
The teenager currently trains on a weekly basis with the Marcus Cooper stables in Ararat while continuing his studies.
