More than 80 people attended the Blue Ribbon Foundation event, which rasied money for Wimmera Base Hospital.
Detective Senior Constable Grant Farley and Detective Sergeant Michael Ferwerda of Melbourne’s Clandestine Laboratory Squad spoke about their experiences, and the advancement of technology they has witnessed.
“It’s hard to detect labs,” Det Sen Const Farley said.
“These days you can put a lab in a suitcase, it’s so mobile.”
The officers took the audience through the danger of clandestine laboratories, the explosion and chemical harm posed, as well as impacts of the drugs they produce.
They also discussed the squad’s involvement in the 2013 raid on Yaapeet’s old post office.
Detective Senior Sergeant Anthony Mercer and Detective Sergeant Kurt Woods from the Family Violence Taskforce also spoke.
The detectives told the audience about two active cases involving high risk perpetrators who have committed serious violent offences against multiple victims.
Det Sen Sgt Mercer said family violence affects every community in Australia.
He said last year alone Victoria Police visited 70,000 instances of family violence and in 44,000 cases a child was present when they arrived.
Det Sen Sgt Mercer said 194 instances of family violence occur each day and 30 women died as a result of family violence last year.
“Behind the raw statistics there are actual human being,” he said.
“We don’t want to diminish or sensationalist these figures.
“We want to show the impact family violence is having in Victoria everyday.”
