In round 13 of the Wimmera Football League Stawell Warriors and Nhill Tigers were set to battle it out to the finish, but the game took a turn for the worst.
Stawell Warriors forward David Andrivon laid a hard, but fair tackle on Nhill young gun Jordan Zeitz minutes into the final quarter.
With his arms pinned by his side his head hit the ground.
He was left motionless, but the play continued.
The stretcher made its way onto the field and play was forced to stop.
Zeitz was unconscious for the best part of six minutes.
Once the initial panic was over the crowd and players, looked on stunned.
The ground was silenced.
Despite the tackle being strong it was well within the rules of the game.
Zeitz was responding by the time the ambulance left the ground and he was treated in the Stawell Hospital before being discharged later that evening.
Both teams tried to stay warm and keep the legs moving before play resumed.
The fizz was well and truly out of the game.
As if one injury wasn’t enough Nhill's Grant McLeod later landed awkwardly and was stretchered from the ground.
He was also taken via ambulance to Stawell Hospital for a lower back and hip complaint.
Both injuries appeared to be very serious at the time and it was a big wake up call to everyone involved.
Neither incident was malicious.
Zeitz and McLeod were both up and about on Sunday morning.
They both attended the teams recovery session however they were slightly worse for wear.
Both players would be unlikely starters in this weekends match against the Demons.
Stawell Warriors and Nhill Football Club trainers, officials, players supporters and coaching staff all handled the situation promptly and professionally.
