The Stawell Stormwater Alternative Natural Solutions (SWANS) project was awarded the prestigious Department of Sustainability and Environment Water Efficiency Improvements Award in the 2012 Regional Achievement and Community Awards.
Northern Grampians Shire Council won the award from a strong field of nominees and was one of eight category winners.
Three hundred and twenty guests enjoyed the Gala event in Bendigo last Friday night, including official guest Damian Drum MLC, Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Development.
"These awards are about recognising community commitment and contribution and we congratulate Northern Grampians Shire Council and all of the nominees for their achievements.
"We are delighted to sponsor these awards which have unearthed many community champions," Alan Goodwin, North West Regional Director, Department of Sustainability and Environment said.
Winners each received a $2,000 Goalsaver Account from the Commonwealth Bank or television exposure on PRIME7.
Northern Grampians Shire Council developed the Stawell Storm Water Alternative Natural Solutions Project in 2011.
The project involves the construction of water quality treatment ponds, storage dams, linkages and transfer infrastructure across the town.
Stormwater subsequently irrigates sportsgrounds, parks, gardens and street trees.
This is the second award the council's SWANS project has won, being named winner of the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria's 2012 Tidy Towns Water Efficiency award.
