In Ararat on Wednesday, these modest, unsung heroes were afforded some overdue recognition in the form of a low-key morning tea.
From the Ararat City Band to the Ararat Men’s Shed, about a dozen groups were represented.
Each of the organisations present received funding of up to $5000 earlier in the year under the federal government’s grants program.
Member for Wannon Dan Tehan said it was impossible to put a price on the contribution volunteers make to their communities.
“The willingness of people to put in their time and their effort on behalf of their community never ceases to amaze me,” he said.
Ararat Men’s Shed vice-president David Hair said one of his group’s primary aims was to get men opening up about their health.
“We promote discussion about men’s health and wellbeing … and encourage people to get it out in the open,” he said.
“It’s a great thing to be involved in a community activity where people can be helped in a situation.”
