It is 2021 in Nelson and Gloria, aged 97, hasn’t long to live. Her son Craig is pushing her to move to a ‘retireville’ but she wants to die in her own home.
On a whim, Gloria buys an extraordinary designer handbag, worth $11,000. The purchase not only meets with huge disapproval from her son but sets off a series of unusual events, which transform Gloria’s remaining days and enable her to send a message to the future.
Gloria’s Handbag opened in Wellington, New Zealand, at Circa Theatre in March 2014. Since then, Helen has been touring the show around New Zealand and Australia.
“It’s really about consumerism and the stuff we accumulate throughout our lives,” she said.
“But it also deals with family issues and finding the magic in our lives.”
The play is set five years in the future.
“This was because we wanted to play around with language, the political situation and technology. I think people will find all of that rather fun,” she said.
Helen collaborated with Sue Rider to write the show.
The pair also worked together on Playing Miss Havisham, which has toured extensively in New Zealand and Australia.
Helen, a writer and performer, has been working in the theatre for 40 years
She is touring the play to libraries across the Wimmera with shows at St Arnaud, Birchip, Harrow, Jeparit and Horsham.
Helen will perform at the St Arnaud Library on Monday, May 16 at 2pm.
Bookings are essential. People can book by calling 5382 5707. Light refreshments will follow the performance.
