The Lions showed patches of good football, but it was far from a four-quarter effort.
Coach Andrew Bach said a lack of concentration and discipline led to the Penshurst thrashing.
“We show glimpses of what we have worked on but then we slip back into being individuals,” Bach said.
“It isn't about getting a kick, for me it is about doing the team thing because that is what we are. We are a team.”
Great Western were competitive in the first half, but when they began to fatigues errors starting appearing in their game.
“I was really pleased with the first half for a minute there we looked like going into half time just four goals down,” Bach said.
“Then we have a lapse and end up eight down in just a couple of minutes. We need to be competitive for more than eight or nine minutes a quarter.”
Lions battled well in defence, but the ball was coming in too fast and too often for them to stem the bleeding.
“We made several silly mistakes and it resulted in forward entries for them,” Bach said.
“With how fast the ball was coming in they were always going to be under pressure and they did not a bad job.”
Penhurst forward Will McGregor created plenty of issues for the Lions backmen, however, as he kicked a total of 13 goals.
During the second half when the game was done and dusted Bach made moved to get some of his players going, but was unsuccessful.
Luke Notting was awarded best on ground followed closely by Lachie Malloy.
Sam Cocks was the best of the forwards with five goals for the second consecutive week.
