North Park athletic track set to undergo repairs

STAWELL - North Park's athletic track will have temporary repairs undertaken, before major repairs to flood-damaged sections are completed next year.

Northern Grampians Shire Council chief executive officer, Justine Linley said the council - which has committed to the track repairs in the 2012/13 capital works program - cannot complete full track repairs before the start of the summer season.

Mrs Linley said the major repairs will be a large-scale operation with drainage, base and resurfacing work, which due to time constraints cannot be completed before the warmer months when track use is traditionally at its peak.

"The damage does not pose a significant risk to recreational users such as joggers and walkers but it is a problem for competition use as there are undulating surfaces, which render the track unsuitable for competitive racing," she said.

Schools and clubs hold athletics events at North Park in the warmer months, and other sports clubs use it for competition training.

Council will complete interim repairs to address some of the more significant damaged areas and these should be commenced by the end of September.

"Just as we have completed interim repairs on flood-damaged roads to reopen them for use, these repairs will allow for a level of safety for track users until we can undertake the full program of repairs," Mrs Linley said.

"Council asks recreational users to take care and avoid the damaged areas on the track until they are repaired. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank everyone for their patience."
