But American man Spencer Reilly sought out cage-diving off Gansbaai in South Africa and probably got more than he bargained for.
In a video posted to YouTube, a great white shark is seen chasing a string of bait straight into the underwater cage and locking its teeth around one of the cage's bars before swimming away.
The animal's mouth stops just centimetres from the group inside the cage. "Holy shit!" a woman is heard to exclaim.
The waters off Gansbaai are a mecca for great white sharks and the area is a popular destination for thrill-seeking tourists.
Mr Reilly told the Nine Network that the experience was somewhat unusual but exhilarating.
"That should not have happened really, they don't like the shark to get too close to the cage. But there was low visibility and the shark came at the bait extremely fast," he said.
"It was not too scary because it happened so fast, and then it was pretty exhilarating."
He said the footage had not been sped up, as had been speculated on the YouTube comment thread.
