The first day of sales of Australian wool was held on Wednesday with all three Selling Centres operating. The falling trend of recent weeks continued as a strengthening Australian dollar dampened buying interest. Prices fell on both Wednesday and Thursday and the pass-in rate remained high.
The EMI fell by 16 cents on Wednesday and a further six cents on Thursday, closing at 1195 cents. With the A$ lifting by more than 1UScent for the week, the EMI was slightly higher at 860 USc/kg.
In Sydney, the market for 17.5 to 18.5 microns wool was solid, particularly on Thursday and for lots with better style and strength. Prices for this wool increased, mainly on Thursday.
Prices for broader Merino wool fell, notably for overlong and high mid-break wools.
The Melbourne sale was highlighted by relatively solid support for Merino fleece wools, particularly the better style and strength lots.
