True stories or fiction in any genre will be welcome. No previous experience necessary and writers of all ages are welcome to submit their work.
Positive Words magazine was established in 2002 to help create more opportunities for writers. It is a monthly magazine, available by subscription, and since it began has published hundreds of new and established writers of all ages from all over Australia.
Each twenty-four page issue is filled with stories, poetry, inspirational articles, hints to improve your writing, daily writing topics and competition advice. All published contributors receive a complimentary copy.
Editor Sandra James is a former journalist and writing tutor who has won a number of prizes for short stories and poetry.
These have included the Milton Simms Medal for Literature, the Joseph Furphy Commemorative Literary Prize and the Mary Grant Bruce Prize for a Children’s Story, and has had her work published in Woman’s Day, My Weekly (UK), Grass Roots, English Women’s Weekly Fiction and in various journals and anthologies in print and online.
She started the magazine after realising that many of her students were becoming discouraged at the limited opportunities available, especially for new writers.
“There are so many talented writers just waiting to be discovered,” she says.
“I love getting work from new writers who have previously lacked the confidence to send their stories or poems to a publisher and it is always a thrill when someone tells me being published in Positive Words magazine has inspired them to try other opportunities.”
Stories and poems do not have to be ‘positive’; the name comes from the idea of doing something positive in having a go at submitting.
Other upcoming themes for future issues of the magazine include Spring and Flowers, but the themes are only part of each issue and work on any subject is always welcome.
As well as the monthly magazine, Positive Words also holds a mini-competition every month where the winner receives a six-month subscription for writing a very short story or poem and two major competitions each year for longer stories and poems.
