Ms Staley toured the court houses in both cities on Tuesday, along with Shadow Attorney General John Pesutto and said security was totally inadequate.

Both Ms Staley and Mr Pesutto agreed during their visit, that a call needed to be made for an urgent increase to security at both sites.

Mr Pesutto and Ms Staley were in Stawell as part of a visit of court facilities and police stations across the electorate of Ripon.

Ms Staley said there were countless incidents of witnesses and staff being assaulted during trials and she said security must be increased outside the court houses.

"I've heard of too many stories of staff and witnesses being severely hurt during court proceedings,” Ms Staley said.

“Security needs to be immediately boosted.

"Staff are being spat on and assaulted, criminals are hitting witnesses, fights are breaking out the front of the court house because two conflicting groups are not given separate spaces.

“This all needs to stop. People have a right to feel safe in court.

“The state government needs to immediately act and boost safety protocols to ensure that right is protected.

"Being involved in a court case is a stressful time for anyone, people don't need to worry about being attacked on top of everything else,” she said. 

Mr Pesutto praised Ms Staley for putting community safety first and strongly advocating to the government for this improvement.

"As an MP Louise Staley has a strong record in supporting projects that improve safety in the community," Mr Pesutto said.

Mr Pesutto said Premier Daniel Andrews could not afford to ignore the issue.

“Too many people have been hurt. Funding for safety and security at local magistrates courts needs to be boosted now,” he said.
