Perth city recorded 60 millimetres of rainfall between midnight Friday and midnight Sunday – nearly half of June's 132-millimetre average rainfall in 48 hours.

In the southern suburbs a flash hailstorm battered homes early on Sunday afternoon.

It looks as though the show is over for the time being, though. Showers contributed to a 13.2 millimetre recording for Perth between midnight and 7am Monday, but these are expected to clear during the course of the day.

The severe weather warning for damaging and locally destructive winds to people in the South West was cancelled about 4am on Monday, with the low pressure system south of the state now sliding to the South-East, well away from the south coast.

The last reported significant wind gust was 102 kilometres per hour at Cape Leeuwin at 10.25pm on Sunday.

The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed reports of hail on Sunday in up to one-centimetre stones from Murdoch to as far south as Bunbury.

"The hail comes with the really heavy showers [of rain] - and we've had a couple of those showers come through," the spokesman said.

Champion Lakes resident Nick Shannon was at home when he was startled by the sound of hailstones pelting the windows of the house he had recently moved into.

"The winds were cyclone intense and the sound of the hailstones was incredible. I reckon they were getting bigger over the two or three minutes that the fall lasted," he said.

Mr Shannon said that a few of his recently dug in plants were "looking a bit sorry for themselves" and that his street was strewn with leaf litter.

Perth registered 33 millimetres of rain in the 24 hours between 9am Saturday and 9am Sunday. Its median rainfall for June is 132 millimetres while its highest monthly fall was 251 millimetres in 2005. A year later, Perth got its least amount of June rain when it recorded a miserly 24.6mm.

Showers and thunderstorms are still likely, particularly between Walpole and Esperance, and a vigorous and cold southerly flow will persist about the southern districts during Monday and into Tuesday as a high pressure system develops to the west of the state.

Dangerous surf conditions that could cause beach erosion are still expected, mainly between Cape Naturaliste and Albany, and tides will be higher than normal along the south coast between Augusta and Israelite Bay.

There is a gale warning for the Albany and Esperance coasts, and strong wind warnings for Perth local waters and the Geraldton, Lancelin, Perth, Bunbury Geographe, Leeuwin and Eucla coasts.

Graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and south to southwesterly winds are expected during Monday in the Lower West, Central Wheatbelt, Great Southern, South East Coastal, South Coastal and South West forecast districts, with associated high risks of the loss of lambs and sheep exposed to the weather.

In Perth, the predicted cold snap has not yet arrived, with the cloud cover keeping the overnight minimum for Monday to a relatively warm 10.8 degrees.

It is not expected to get much warmer than that, however, with a maximum temperature of 16 degrees predicted for Monday, and Tuesday will be cause enough to break out the thermals as the morning mercury edges three degrees.
