Stable Star is a promising five year old gelding from the Terry and Karina O'Sullivan stables and with Stawell jockey Chelsea Hall onboard and several of the owners also from Stawell the win had a nice feel to it.
Hall was pleased to see Stable Star draw a good gate after a poor gate led to a poor result at Flemington in his last start.
Jumping from barrier four, Hall stuck to the plan which was to roll forward.
Jamie Opperman Woakwine pushed to the front and combined with Wayne Walters trained Peace and Quiet, were able to set a fast tempo in the early stages of the race.
Hall's ride was assisted by the fast pace which allowed Stable Star to settle into a rythym.
Stable Star hit the line strongly after coming into the straight as the only likely winner.
Stable Star rewarded the punters that showed faith paying $34.80.
The win for Hall was her first cup and she was ecstatic when she returned to scale.
"It was a great feeling to win my first cup," Hall said.
"To do it on a stable favourite that you work with everyday just adds to the excitement."
While Hall has recently galloped Stable Star at track work there is usually plenty of competition to ride the quiet achiever.
"It is a bit of a fight over who rides him at track work," Hall said.
"I've stolen him off Smiley the last couple of weeks, but because he has a share in him he generally gets his way."
Stable Star has a huge connection with O'Sullivan stables as several of the workers have shares in him.
Smiley Chan who is a track rider and stable hand has shares and Sam Mok who has a similar role to Smiley is also a part owner.
Stable foreman Jade Kennedy has shares as well as Halls Gap family Steve and Leigh Johnston.
Several of the Stawell owners were in attendance to accept the cup on Sunday.
Stable Star will have a slight step up in distance this weekend when he races in the Mount Gambier Cup held at Penola.
It will be a similar field to that of Casterton and he will again be expected to race in the front half of the field.
Adding to the stable success was a surprise win from Universal Rose in Mildura.
The eight year old mare was given little hope going into the race and surprised everyone when she was able to salute with Dean Holland on board.
