The $2500 scholarship is being offered to 18-20 year olds by the Northern Grampians Shire Council, in partnership with the Foundation for Young Australians and Global Vision International, to support young residents to take a three to six month placement in countries such as Fiji, Laos, Nepal and Thailand, volunteering in the areas of education, environmental conservation or community development.
Experience Asia lead Hayley Bolding, said that the opportunity to engage with Asia through a volunteering placement is a life changing experience.
"Participants get to live and work in a culture most likely very different from their own, build resilience and confidence in their own abilities, and return to their community as engaged global citizens with a new outlook on their place in the world," Hayley Bolding said.
The scholarship is an investment by the community, for the community which give otherwise inaccessible opportunities to local young people to engage in our Asian region.
Mayor, Cr Murray Emerson who is a huge supporter of young people expanding their horizons through travel, said the Northern Grampians Shire Council is proud to support and engage young people from the community to access these immersive placements in Asia.
"Enriching experiences in our region will support the development of the type of global citizens and intercultural leadership and understanding our community will need in the future and I encourage all young people to apply," Cr Emerson said.
Applications close May 29, 2015 and are open to any Australian citizen, aged 18 -20 and residing within the Northern Grampians Shire Council.
