Ambulance Victoria spokesperson John Mullen said the boy drank a mouthful of petrol from a soft drink can on a property near Stawell Thursday afternoon.
He said the boy was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to Ararat Hospital.
Mr Mullen said the boy was then airlifted to the Royal Children's Hospital shortly after.
Mr Mullen was unsure why petrol was in the can.
