The Lions were competitive for the first half when they took on Penshurst, but as injuries struck Penshurst took control.
Lions were six goals down at the main break, but with only one rotation they were limited with what they could do.
Despite the lack of numbers to finish off the game coach Andrew Bach was impressed with the slight improvement the playing group showed.
"They improved on last week," Bach said.
"Their tackling improved and the endeavour was there."
Former coach Nick Thomas played his best game in some time from both ends of the ground while youngsters Jayden McCartney and Angus Murray played their role even after a full game in the juniors.
Penshurst were in possession of the football for the majority of the match, but they failed to convert their opportunities.
Great Western finished with no players on the bench leaving it to the 18 that were out on the ground.
"There were plenty of blokes that worked hard all day," Bach said.
"Shannon Notting rucked all day, Adam Bullock tried hard and we found a new role for Daniel Hoare."
Hoare had the job of containing Justin Eales, and was able to nullify his influence on the game.
"With all the injuries we moved players around and found some versatility in them," Bach said.
Going down by 65 points Great Western still have plenty to work on before their next game.
"The players are all disappointed with the result," Bach said.
"We know what is going on, we just have to work together to try and change that. It is just a matter of hard work at training and sticking together."
Bach maintains that the group look good in the open spaces and will look to create more space and opportunities for his team.
Bach is hopeful of a win against Ararat on Sunday, but will need a few players to return to his senior line up.
Great Western had eight changes from last weekend to this weekend's team and will need to find some consistency in their line up if they are to have any success this year.
