Running in the invitational Federation University Herb Hedemann 1600 metre event, Hamerlok was able to work his way to the front where his consistent training began to pay off.
The lean full time runner from Tasmania has suffered from several different injuries over the past three years and right now he has been in consistent training for the first time in his life.
"I've been able to get some really good consistent training done for the past year or so," Hamerlok said.
"I haven't been able to do much for the last three seasons, but I put in a lot to be here this year and this is a good reward."
While Hamerlok had been ill three weeks prior to Easter, which had seen his trainer taper off, he was still in good running form.
"I've been training really hard and I'm injury free," Hamerlok said.
"It is a pretty big event and this is the first time I've won."
Hamerlok had just three hours in between his 1600 metre event and the 3200 metre final which followed after the Woolworths Stawell Gift.
Running off 20 metres and giving some contestants a 380 metre head start Hamerlok stopped the clock at 9.05.13 and earned his second sash.
