Holding back tears the full time teacher from South Australia was overwhelmed and speechless when she received her first sash.
The young 400 metre runner also took part in the Women's Gift which would have been the ultimate success. However a sash is a sash and she was thrilled.
"All the hard work and preparation has finally paid off," Trewartha said.
Trewartha had plenty of work to do to catch the frontmarker who was given a 20 metre head start.
"I didn't know how I was going to do it even though I tried to work it out before the race," Trewartha said.
"During the race I just went for it and I made the right decision."
Trewartha has run at Stawell just once before and never made it through the heats.
She will be returning next year in hope of making the finals in the Australia Post Women's Stawell Gift.
