The regatta attracted entries from all parts of the state including a contingent of nine boats from Phillip Island and four from Adelaide.
The Stawell club was represented by eight sailors including new members Scott Hearle and Peter Mullinger in a large fleet of 46 boats, which established a new record entry for the annual event, eclipsing the previous high of 41 in 2012.
Competition took place over three days in fine and warm conditions, although a lack of wind at times created challenges and frustration for many skippers.
Ian Lane from Colac generously donated his time and the use of his power boat in the role of chief race official and with the aid of local volunteers, produced some very good courses despite the shifty wind conditions.
The series produced some very close racing and the sheer size of the fleet caused congestion at the start line and buoy roundings, but apart from the odd dodgem style incident, most sailors obeyed the rules while those who infringed had to do the required penalty turns.
As the weekend progressed the racing provided more leadership changes than Canberra and after six races two contenders, John Gibson (Williamstown) and Murray Shaw (Indented Head) were sharing the lead on equal points with two races remaining.
The seventh race was won by Shaw ahead of Gibson in fourth, but in a thrilling finale, these roles were reversed in the last race, leaving them tied on 16 points for the series.
By finishing ahead in the last race Gibson won the series on countback, which was an impressive effort, being only his first regatta sailing in the Impulse class.
Matt Draper from Rhyll was third.
The best performed local skippers were Peter Mullinger in 15th overall and Ross Bennett 17th, each managing creditable fourth placings in their best races.
George Grellet claimed a sixth place in race three and finished in equal 27th overall with Johno Knight.
Club Commodore Tony Hillier praised the contribution from the team of club members and families and other volunteers who helped run the event, along with the Lake Fyans Caravan Park and other sponsors.
