Shannon Edwards of Hamilton was elated to win at Stawell at the Australia Day meeting and celebrate one of his few winners in his short training career.
The 29 year old has just two horses in work at the minute and five year old gelding Jilliby Diablo is one of them.
Although being hard work at times Edwards was pleased to win and finally see some of his gelding's potential coming to fruition.
"He has been a bit of a pain really," Edwards said.
"He has just had plenty of niggling injuries and niggling problems to overcome. He still has a lot to learn, but it is onwards and upwards from here."
The Edwards stable was confident going into the race, given he had run a good fifth against a tough field at Hamilton at his last start.
"It was a bottom up race and because he had no form the field was a lot easier," Edwards said.
"We were pretty confident going in, but you just never know."
Jason Lee was in the sulky and is someone Edwards respects as a driver.
"I am rapt with Jason, he is a great driver," Edwards said.
The plan for Jilliby Diablo was always to get him out to the front because he has plenty of speed.
Lee drove the horse well and was rewarded.
Edwards plans for Jilliby Diablo to have his next start on his home track at Hamilton.
