With only one race day a year, the hard working committee of Great Westerners promises a great day out for everyone, and will even throw in some horse racing.

This year race day falls on the Australia Day long weekend, giving visitors the day before and the day after to either go to some of the local attractions or take the opportunity for a rest.

The racecourse is as country as you will get and just as beautiful without the fuss.

It has an array of towering aged pine trees providing welcomed shade and relief for the heat if it is a hot summer's day.

The Great Western Cup is a family day and with plenty of entertainment and prizes they are sure to enjoy themselves.

Many of Stawell's horse trainers will make the effort to get to Great Western for the cup meeting.

Trainers have said it is a good race meeting for a couple of minutes down the road so plenty of local horses will be on show.

Weather permitting the Sunday meeting will be a huge success.

In keeping with the theme of food, wine and racing Emma Dean, winner of 2013 Master Chef Series, will be track side again offering free demonstrations and tastings for the general public.

Pre sale tickets and marquees are selling well so if that is any sign crowd numbers should be up.
