The 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour will visit Stawell tomorrow as part of the second last leg of its three and a half month journey leading up to the 2014 Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Stawell residents will have the chance to experience first-hand the magic and history of the Melbourne Cup during a series of exciting events tomorrow.
Northern Grampians Shire Mayor, Cr Kevin Erwin said the town is delighted to have been chosen by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) as one of the 34 official destinations to host the 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour.
"We are excited to welcome the Cup to Stawell because it offers our community a unique opportunity to view one of the most iconic trophies in Australian sport and to celebrate the extraordinary history of 'the race that stops a nation'," Cr Erwin said.
VRC Acting Chief Executive Julian Sullivan said the VRC encouraged the Stawell community to share in the heart-warming stories from the race's 153-year history.
"As we embark on the second last leg of the 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour, we invite residents from Stawell and surrounding areas to be a part of history when the Cup comes to town ahead of the Melbourne Cup Carnival," Mr Sullivan said.
While in Stawell, the Cup will participate in the following events: 8.45 - 10am Visit to Stawell Athletic Club; 10am - 11am - Visit to Eventides Homes; 11am - 11.20am - Melbourne Cup Main Street Parade; 11.20am - 11.25am Mayor address at Stawell Town Hall; 11.30am - 2pm - Visit to Stawell Racecourse; 2.30pm - 3pm - Visit to Halls Gap.
Two-time Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mick Robins and former VRC CEO Dale Monteith will join the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour celebrations in Stawell.
Champion racehorse and 1992 Melbourne Cup winner, Subzero, will also make an appearance.
Now in the twelfth year of the Tour, the $175,000, 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy is accompanied by Melbourne Cup veterans and racing legends who share their personal stories with communities as the Tour continues across Australia.
During the Tour, local communities are encouraged to use #EmiratesMelbourneCup when posting images and comments via social media.
The Cup will return to Melbourne on Monday 27 October for a week of Melbourne Cup Carnival celebrations ahead of the 154th Emirates Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November.
